About the NDF Support Tool

Non-detriment findings (NDFs) are science-based decisions about whether international trade in CITES listed-species is detrimental or not. NDFs require the collation of data and information in order for CITES Scientific Authorities (SAs) to make decisions on NDFs. The concept behind the NDF Support Tool is to bring together key datasets used in NDFs in a streamlined way to assist Scientific Authorities in determining the level of risk for trade in a specific species. It is an interactive online tool that allows users to search by CITES-listed species and country/territory combinations, and explore data relating to the species’ conservation status, distribution, trade level, threats and life history. These data elements align with key data fields identified in CITES Conf. Res. 16.7 on Non-detriment findings.

The tool compiles datasets from multiple sources. It is directly linked to Species+, the CITES Checklist and the CITES Trade Database (managed by UNEP-WCMC on behalf of the CITES Secretariat) and is automatically updated when data in these databases change. It also contains the most up to date version of the IUCN Red List, as well as data on species life history from over 30 data sources.

The development of the NDF Support Tool was made possible thanks the financial support from the UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund under the Trade, Development and the Environment Hub project (project number ES/S008160/1). The NDF Support Tool is a collaboration between UNEP-WCMC and IUCN.
